Purpose:
To present a case of 28-year-old patient with an advanced epithelial ingrowth after LASIK surgery complicated with Acanthamoeba and fungal keratitis
Setting:
: Department of Ophthalmology, University Hospital No. 5, Medical University of Silesia, Katowice, Poland
Methods:
The patient was admitted to the Corneal Diseases Unit, of the Department of Ophthalmology, University Hospital No. 5, Katowice, Poland. Three years before she underwent the LASIK surgery in both eyes, (indication was myopia of right eye /-5,0 Dsph -0,75 Dcyl ax 2/ and left eye /-5,5 Dsph -0,75 Dcyl ax 168/. After 2 years on follow-up examination epithelial ingrowth in the cornea of right eye was stated (BCVA=0,9). After 3 months epithelial ingrowth has expanded (BCVA=0,3). Confocal microscopy of corneas was performed. It was stated severe epithelial ingrowth complicated with Acanthamoeba and fugal keratitis of the right eye.
Results:
Patient was subjected to the treatment of removal epithelium ingrowth under the corneal flap and the systemic and local treatment was applied.
Conclusions:
LASIK procedure can be complicated with ingrowth of the epithelium under the flap of the cornea but in rare cases it can be also complicated with Acanthamoeba and fungal keratitis.
