Purpose:
To compare optical correction of presbyopia, contrast sensitivity and questionnaire of quality of life between a keratoconus' and a control presbyopic group.
Setting:
: Clinic Saint Victor Ophthalmology, 354 Boulevard de Beauville, Amiens 80000, France.
Methods:
This retrospective study compared 11 patients with no operated keratoconus (22 eyes) versus 10 control patients (20 eyes). We studied optical correction, contrast sensitivity, and the NEI-VFQ 25 questionnaire of quality of life. Results were tested with statistical analysis using the Mann Whitney test.
Results:
The average of near optical correction in the keratoconus group (K group) was 1.2 diopter+/- 0.5 vs 2.03+/-0.76 in the control group (p=0.009). Contrast sensitivity is lower in the K group.
All scores of the NEI-VFQ 25 questionnaire of quality of life were globally significally lower in K group than in the control group.
Conclusions:
This original study of presbyopia and keratoconus suggested that the physiopathogenesis of accommodation are not yet known. The results pointed that a probable corneal pseudo-accommodation could explain the persistence of the accommodation in the keratoconus group, as that seen after some refractive surgeries.
