Role of ultrabiomicroscopy in the assessment of age-related alterations of the anterior segment of the eye

Purpose:

The purpose was to show the usefulness of ultrabiomicroscopy (UBM) in the assessment of age-related alterations in the anterior segment of the eye.

Setting:

: The examinations were performed in the Ophthalmology Clinic of The Medical Centre of Postgraduate Education in Professor Or?owski’s Clinical Hospital in Warsaw.

Methods:

We present a series of cases of patients with age-related alterations in the anterior segment of the eye. Ultrabiomicroscopy was performed in both eyes with the use of (OTI- Scan 3000, Opthalmic Technologies). All the examinations were performed by the same examiner, JK. We compared the results of the affected eye with the healthy eye to show the usefulness of UBM in detecting pathologies. Our results were then confronted with the available literature.

Results:

Ultrabiomicroscopy showed to be an examination, that enables visualization and documentation of the changes taking place in the pre- and retroiridal regions. High resolution of the images and the possibility to perform topographical measurements can aid in the search for the pathogenesis of the age-related diseases in the anterior segment of the eye.

Conclusions:

The examination is a helpful tool in the quest to find anatomical causes underlying the phenomenon of presbyopy and in the functional evaluation of “accommodative” intraocular lenses. The possibility to assess changes in the opacifying lens, as well as integrity of the zonular fibers contributes to a decrease in the number of the complications by cataract surgery. Ultrabiomicroscopy can also aid in determining the pathomechanism of secondary glaucoma developed due to the age-related anatomical alterations of the pre- and retroiridal regions.
