Purpose:
To evaluate the ocular causes for referral of drivers to a secondary health committee of a district hospital in order to reassess their ability to drive.
Setting:
: Department of Ophthalmology, General Hospital of Veria, Veria, Greece.
Methods:
We studied retrospectively the records of drivers who were referred to the secondary health committee of the General Hospital of Veria to reassess their ability to drive due to eye problems in the past two years. 423 patients (male) with a mean age of 57.89 years participated in the study, 83 of which had vision problems.
Results:
57% of patients had color vision problems (dyschromatopsia), 13% were one-eyed, 11% had cataract, 12% had diabetic retinopathy lesions and 9% had varying degrees of age-related macular degeneration.
Conclusions:
The color vision impairment is the most common cause of drivers’ referral to secondary health committee to reassess their ability to drive.
