Purpose:
To present a clinical case of a patient submitted to limbal stem cell transplant in the surgical treatment of pterygium.
Setting:
: Simple surgical excision is associated with higher recurrence rates that can be lowered when an autologous conjunctiva transplant is done. The most recent and surgically complex technique described is the autologous limbal stem cells and conjunctiva transplant. The latter has the lowest recurrence rate.
Methods:
The authors present a patient followed in the cornea department with a pterygium submitted to excision and autologous limbal stem cells and conjunctiva transplant. The clinical case was documented, photographs were taken before and after the procedure and the surgical procedure was also filmed.
Results:
The patient presents an aesthetic and functional rehabilitation and no recurrence has occurred.
Conclusions:
Pterygium excision surgery associated with limbal stem cells and conjunctiva transplant is the surgical procedure with the best outcome. These results can be justified by an anatomical and functional reconstruction.
