Purpose:
To evaluate the effectiveness of intrastromal ring implantation assisted by femtosecond laser.
Setting:
: Reina Sofía Hospital
Methods:
Intracorneal segments were implanted (Corneal Ring, Visiontech, Bloss) in 53 eyes of 43 patients with keratoconus, pellucid marginal degeneration and astigmatism after keratoplasty using the femtosecond laser (Technolas Perfect Vision ®, Heidelberg, Germany).
We study the following parameters before surgery, one month and 3 months after the surgery: corrected visual acuity (BCVA) (ETDRS), sphere, cylinder, mean keratometry (Km), maximum simK (SimK max), minimum simK (SimK min)and the anterior chamber depht (ACD). In the statistical analysis we used the t test and the Wilcoxon test.
Results:
The mean age was 38.5 ± 12.97 years.
Initial BCVA = 0.46 ± 0.25, BCVA at month = 0.57 ± 0.24 (p <0.001) at 3 months BCVA = 0.6 ± 0.23 (p = 0.023).
Initial sphere = -1.73 (-4: 1.3) diopters (D). Month = -0.55 (-3: 1) D (p = 0.018). At 3 months = -0.45 (-2.38: 2) D (p = 0.017).
Initial cylinder = -5 (-7.18: -3) D. Month = -3 (-4: -1.58) D (p <0.001). At 3 months = -3 (-4.5: -2.5) D (p <0.001).
Initial Km = 48.53 ± 4.25 D. Km at month = 45.89 ± 3.22 D (p <0.001). Km at 3 months 46.39 ± 4.4 D (p <0.001).
Initial SimK max = 51.97 ± 5.6 D. At month = 47.63 ± 3.39 D (p <0.001). At 3 months = 48.33 ± 4.85 D (p <0.001).
Initial SimK min = 45.09 ± 3.82 D. At month = 44.15 ± 3.51 D (p = 0.081). At 3 months = 44.46 ± 4.33 D (p = 0.31).
Initial ACD = 3.4 ± 0.35 mm. ACD month = 3.31 ± 0.29 mm (p = 0.0052). ACD at 3 months = 3.08 ± 0.21 (p = 0.0013).
Conclusions:
Implantation of intrastromal segments assisted by femtosecond presents favorable results in keratometry and in improving visual acuity of patients.
