Abstract Details

Purpose:

To report a video case of a peculiar complication – needle detachment at the end of cataract surgery.

Setting:

: Independent Public Clinical Hospital No 5, Silesian Medical University, Katowice, Poland

Methods:

After stromal hydration of the wounds the surgeon wanted to pour a few drops of antibiotic using syringe with needle. Unexpectedly, the needle detached under pressure and penetrated through the cornea into the intraocular lens (IOL), causing lens displacement and capsular bag tear.

Results:

This complication required IOL scleral fixation. The final visual acuity was worse than expected after uncomplicated cataract surgery.

Conclusions:

A loose needle detachment can cause dangerous complications with potentially sight-threatening results.
