Visual function after bilateral trifocal intraocular lens implantation

Purpose:

Following cataract surgery it is important not only the improvement in visual acuity but also the effect of vision in patient’s life, called functional vision (FV). Trifocal intraocular lenses (IOL) are designed to correct intermediate visual acuity (VA) without compromising distance and near VA. This IOL has an additional focus (intermediate focus) and is pupil-independent. The purpose is to evaluate visual function (VF) following cataract surgery with bilateral trifocal intraocular lens (IOL).

: Hospital dos Lusíadas, Lisboa

Methods:

Prospective, nonrandomized study that included 52 trifocal IOL (AT LISA tri 839MP®) implantation after cataract surgery. Distance, intermediate and near vision were evaluated. Distance and near stereoacuity and contrast sensitivity were also performed. Patients´ satisfaction (spectacle independence, photic phenomena and overall satisfaction) was assessed by a self-report questionnaire. Results:

Study that included 26 patients, 73,1% female, mean age was 65,5 years. Mean follow-up was 3 months and mean IOL power was 21,59 dioptres (range 15 to 29D). All patients achieved the uncorrected distance, intermediate and near vision of 20/30 or better. Patients reported spectacle independence in more than 90% of their daily activities Visual symptoms such as halos, glare and light sensitivity were mild or inexistent in the majority of patients. Overall satisfaction was high in .the majority of patients regarding distance, intermediate and near vision, respectively.

Conclusions:

Trifocal IOL enable excellent distance, intermediate and near visual acuity associated with high visual function and spectacle independence.
