Purpose:
To study the connection between the types of intraocular lenses (IOL) used in cataract surgery and the later appearance of posterior capsule opacification (PCO).
Setting:
: Eye Clinic „Den” – Sofia, Bulgaria
Methods:
Medical records of patients that had YAG capsulotomy between August 2012 and October 2012 were reviewed.
Results:
A total of 30 patients were treated for PCO in the reviewed period. The mean age of the patients was 71.3 years. In 20 of these cases (67 %) a hydrophilic IOL was implanted and in 10 cases (33 %) a hydrophobic IOL implantation was performed.
Conclusions:
Posterior capsule opacification was more rare in cases when hydrophobic IOL implantation, regardless of the surgeon, who had implanted the IOL.
