Purpose:
To report intraoperative and postoperative outcomes and complications of phacoemulsyfication alone after vitrectomy and combined phacoemulsyfication with pars plana vitrectomy in eyes with cataract and coexisting vitreoretinal diseases.
Setting:
: Department of Ophthalmology, Military Hospital in Wroc?aw , Weigla 5, Poland.
Methods:
This retrospective study reviewed 45 eyes with significant cataract operated after pars plana vitrectomy and 124 eyes with cataract operated during combinated phacoemusyfication with pars plana vitrectomy in the years 2008-2012. The main outcome measurements were anterior segment complications, visual acuity and intra ocular pressure.
Results:
The most common indications for surgery beside cataract were epiretinal membrane, macular hole, retinal detachment and diabetic vitreous hemorrhage. The main intraoperative complication was the rupture of the capsular bag. Postoperative complications included opacification of the posterior capsule, increased intraocular pressure, corneal edema, posterior iris synechia.
Conclusions:
The phacoemulsyfication combined with pars plana vitrectomy is a more safe procedure than two separated procedures - phacoemulsyfication and vitrectomy performed individually.
