Primary foldable intraocular lens implantation (IOL) in infants and small children after congenital cataract surgery: functional outcomes

Purpose:

Evaluation of anatomical and functional state of eyes in children after congenital cataract surgery and primary foldable intraocular lens implantation (IOL)

Setting:

: Clinical studies performed in Clinic of Pediatric Ophthalmology, University Hospital No.5 of the Medical University of Silesia in Katowice Head of the Department: prof. dr hab.n.med.Maria Forminska-Kapu?cik

Methods:

Twenty four eyes of 16 pediatric patients aged 3 to 10 years (mean age 6.7±1.9) including 12 boys and 4 girls were examined.. The age of children at the moment of surgery was mean 1.5(±0.65) years. Cataract surgery PCCC+AV with primary foldable IOL. CDVA, CNVA, intraocular pressure (IOP), axial length of eyeball (AL), refractive error (RE) and optical axis transparency were evaluated after mean follow-up was 5.1(±1.7) years. All patients underwent to visual rehabilitation. Statistical analyses were carried.

Results:

Mean CDVA was 0.5(±0.3), CNVA 0.75(±1.3). Intraocular pressure was normal prior to surgery and throughout the observation period. Mean AL was 22.3mm (±1.24). Mean refractive error was +0.87Dsph(±2.57). In all eyes cornea and optical axis was transparent.

Conclusions:

Primary foldable IOL implantation after congenital cataract surgery creates favourable anatomical conditions for vision improvement in children. Artificial IOL implantation in infants and small children allows the development of central vision, improves the functional outcome and visual acuity.
