Abstract Details

Purpose:

To present the most important recommendations on the management of cataract based in clinical practice guidelines (CPGs). It is necessary to unify criteria thereby reducing variability in clinical practice and provide legal cover to the physician.

Setting:

: Ophthalmology Department, Navy Hospital, Ferrol Health Area, Ferrol, Spain.

Methods:

We revised and evaluated CPGs by the method AGREE (appraisal of guidelines research and evaluation). We select from those who achieved a higher score (Royal College, American Academy and Spanish guidelines ) and select the most important recommendations in a new clinical practice guideline that covers the whole care process of cataract.

Results:

The resulting CPGs contain the most important recommendations based on scientific evidence and understand the entire process of cataract care, from diagnosis, treatment, criteria for inclusion on the waiting list, preoperative anesthesia to post-operative revisions and aids ocular pathologies.

Conclusions:

It is important to follow these practical recommendations. That facilitated, our medical practice, based on scientific evidence thanks to the existence of quality CPGs, assists the professional in making decisions, promoting the unification of criteria and provide legal support in their daily clinical practice.
