Retinal nerve fiber layer thickness after laser in situ keratomileusis

Purpose:

Laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) is now the most common type of refractive surgery. Intraocular pressure (IOP) increases for a short time during the application of the suction ring. The aim of the paper is to assess whether short-term increase of IOP during LASIK procedure causes thinning of peripapillary nerve fiber layers.

Setting:

: Examination was conducted at the 'Eye Vision Center Maja' - Niš

Methods:

We followed 78 eyes in 43 patients with myopia (20 males and 23 females, aged 32+/-4,03 years). The patients did not have any other ocular diseases. Myopia values were in the range from -3,5 D to -7,0 D (mean values -5,0 +/- 1.2 D). RNFL thickness was measured by Cirrus SD-OCT (Carl Zeiss Meditec, Dublin, CA, USA). Measurements were performed immediately before the intervention and 1, 3 and 6 months after the intervention. Mean values of RNFL thickness were compared, as well as the values of RNFL thickness in the superior, inferior, temporal and nasal quadrants.

Results:

Mean value of RNFL thickness before the intervention was 97,2 +/-12.4, and 1,3 and 6 months after the intervention the mean RNFL thickness values were 96,4 +/- 10,6, 96,6 +/-11,5. 97,1 +/- 12,8. Changes in mean RNFL thickness were not statistically significant. Changes in RNFL thickness in the superior, inferior, temporal and nasal quadrants before and after the intervention were also not statistically significant.

Conclusions:

RNFL thickness remains unchanged following LASIK intervention. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
