Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the clinical outcome of a novel aberrometer used to perform WFG LASIK compared to its predecessor

Setting:

: Private Practice. Refractive corporate centers

Methods:

Seven hundred and twenty eyes of 382 patients that underwent WFG LASIK with a new aberrometer (iDesign Advanced WaveScan System, AMO, Santa Ana, CA) that completed a one month examination were compared to a control cohort of 25,820 eyes that underwent WFG LASIK using a well-established aberrometer (WaveScan, AMO, Santa Ana, CA). One month postop clinical and patient reported outcomes were evaluated.

Results:

iDesign and Wavescan groups were well match in terms of preoperative parameters. The new iDesign group mean preop values: sphere -2.09 ± 2.62 D (-10.00 D to +4.25 D), cylinder -0.81 ± 0.81 D (0.00 D to - 5.50 D) and age 36.2yrs. The control cohort mean preop values: sphere -2.33 ± 2.39 D (-11.50 D to +6.75 D), cylinder -0.80 ± 0.76 D (0.00 D to -6.00 D) and age 35.8yrs. At 1 month postop, refractive predictability and UCVA were higher for the new aberrometer group: 91.5 and 91.2% of eyes were within 0.50D of target, 75 and 73% achieved monocular UCVA of 20/16 or better in the new aberrometer and comparison group, respectively. There was no difference in the change in BCVA. Patient satisfaction and quality of vision were also higher in the new aberrometer group.

Conclusions:

iDesign group showed a superior cylinder correction, better UCVA at 20/16 and better and a higher level of patient satisfaction compared to a large matched comparison cohort of patients operated on using the previous model, Wavescan.
