Purpose:
A prospective study of the FLEх efficiency and safety for myopia correction with astigmatism up to 2.0 D.
Setting:
: FSBI “The IRTC “Eye Microsurgery” named after the Academician S.N. Fyodorov” of the Ministry of Public Health of the Russian Federation, Krasnodar Branch
Methods:
The study group included 28 patients (54 eyes) aged from 20 to 47 years (average age is 30.5±1.04 year), the follow-up period was not less than three months. The individual patient interface size selection was based on the cornea horizontal diameter, measured by the IOL Master (Zeiss). The average spherical component before the operation was -4.76±0.29D (from -1.25D to -9.25D), the average cylindrical component was -0.98±0.13D (from -0.5D to -2.25D).
All patients were performed by FLEx technology on the laser system VisuMax® (Carl Zeiss Meditec AG, Jena, Germany) with the pulse frequency of 500 kHz. The planned flap thickness was 120 microns, the average lenticule diameter was 6.2±0.33 mm (from 6.0 mm to 6.5 mm), in the astigmatism correction transition zone was 0.1 mm.
Results:
During the operation and postoperative period in none of the cases the complications were noted. Within 3-4 hours after the operation, 53.5% of patients reported a moderately expressed photophobia, tearing, and foreign body sensation.
In the majority of cases during the first two weeks after the correction achieved uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA) was equivalent to the maximum best corrected visual acuity (BCVA). The results stabilization occurred to the third month after FLEx, what agrees with the other authors’ data. At the end of the follow-up period mean UCVA was 0.93±0.13 while mean BCVA before the operation was 0.96±0.13.
Refractive data of the study group patients after the correction were the following: the average spherical component was 0.42±0.08D (0.25 to 1.25), the average cylindrical component -0.57±0.1 (0.25 to 1.0).
After femtosecond lenticule extraction the study group patients’ refraction ±0.5D was achieved in 88.8% of cases, ±1.0D - in 100% of cases. Refractive data have stabilized for 1 month, and reached planned emmetropic refraction has been remaining stable during the whole follow-up period.
Conclusions:
CONCLUSION. The analysis of the prospective study results showed this technology effectiveness and safety that allows to consider FLEх as a choice method for the compound myopic astigmatism correction. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
