5 year evolution in LASIK surgery: comparison of 3 different platforms

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare visual outcomes, and intra- and post-operative complications of three different groups of patients who underwent LASIK surgery using mechanical microkeratome Hansatome (Bausch & Lomb) plus excimer laser MEL 80 (Carl Zeiss), or LDV femtosecond laser (Ziemer) in combination with excimer lasers MEL 80 or WaveLight 500 (Alcon).

Setting:

: Eye Clinic Irman, Žalec, Slovenia.

Methods:

In this retrospective study in patients receiving LASIK surgery between 2008 and mid-2013, residual refractive error and changes in best corrected spectacle visual acuity (BCSVA) were assessed 6 – 12 months after surgery. Intra- and post-operative side effects were also recorded.

Results:

Data of 237 eyes from each group (120 or 121 patients in each group) were analysed. The procedures were mostly correction of myopic spherical equivalent (95 % – 96 % of eyes). Visual and refractive outcomes were similar between all three groups of patients with a similar percentage, but different sets of intra- and post-operative complications were observed.

Conclusions:

All three combinations of LASIK platforms provided good visual acuities and refractive results. Different kinds of complications and benefits between LASIK with mechanical microkeratome and all laser LASIK will be discussed. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
