Abstract Details

Purpose:

To analyse visual outcomes, and intra- and post-operative side effects in patients who underwent refractive surgery using Visian Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL) (STAAR® Surgical Company).

Setting:

: Eye Clinic Irman, Žalec, Slovenia.

Methods:

In this retrospective study in patients receiving ICL implantation between 2010 and mid-2013, residual refractive error, changes in best corrected spectacle visual acuity (BCSVA) and spectacle independence were evaluated 6 – 12 months after surgery. Post-operative side effects were also recorded.

Results:

Data of 76 myopic eyes (39 consecutive patients) were analysed. Post-operative sphere power was ≤ 0,5 D in 74 eyes (97 %), cylinder power was ≤ 0,5 D in 59 eyes (78 %). 1 eye lost 1 line, 16 (21 %) eyes gained 1 or more. 37 (94 %) patients were spectacle independent. 2 patients had elevated intra ocular pressure (IOP) in both eyes post-operatively, which decreased to pre-operative levels after 1 week and 3 months, respectively. ICL had to be removed from 1 eye due to uveitic reaction.

Conclusions:

ICL implantation is a procedure that provides excellent visual acuities and good refractive results with low spherical residual error but higher cylinder residual error, which might require spectacle wear. IOP and uveitic signs should be monitored pre- and post-operatively. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
