Purpose:
To report a case of corneal ectasia after unilateral excimer laser phototherapeutic keratectomy (PTK) in order to treat corneal scarring following recurrent pterygium surgery.
Setting:
: Whipps Cross University Hospital, London, United Kingdom
Methods:
Clinically significant iatrogenic keratectasia is a rare but well
recognized complication following laser in situ keratomileusis,
particularly in eyes with thinner corneas. In many instances this can markedly compromise visual outcome and hence is a cause for
concern. However, iatrogenic keratectasia is less common after PTK.
Results:
We report a case of corneal ectasia over a period of 20 years following
PTK for corneal scarring after recurrent pterygium surgery, which was evaluated using computerised cornea topography and pachymetry.
Conclusions:
To the best of our knowledge, this would appear to be the first report of corneal ectasia over a period of 20 years after unilateral PTK for corneal scarring following recurrent pterygium surgery. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
