The possible effect of local ascorbic acid on induced corneal abrasion in male rabbits

Purpose:

To evaluate Effect Of Local Ascorbic Acid On Induced Corneal Abrasion In Male Rabbits

Setting:

: Faculty of medicine, Ophthalmology and histology department

Methods:

This study was applied on 14 male rabbits which divided into 7 groups each group consisted of 2 rabbits (4 eyes). First group is a control group in which the rabbits were exposed to topical BSS for one day then were sacrified. In groups IIa and IIb, the rabbits were undergone complete mechanical denudation of the corneal epithelium in both eyes and followed up for one day after that they were sacrified but group IIa treated with BSS and group IIb was treated with topical Ascorbic acid 5 times daily for one day. In groups IIIa and IIIb, the same as groups IIa and IIb respectively but rabbits were sacrified after 2 days also for groups IVa and IVb where rabbits were sacrified after 3 days. After rabbits scarifying corneal histological sections were prepared for histological sections to be examined under light microscope

Results:

Clinically, improvement of the ulcer size and restoration of corneal clarity is more rapid in rabbits treated by topical ascorbic acid in comparison with other rabbits. Light microscopic results showed that groups treated with topical ascorbic acid showing less inflammatory cell infiltration and less fibrosis and rapid regeneration in comparison to groups that not treated with ascorbic acid.

Conclusions:

From the results, we can conclude the topical ascorbic acid has a good positive effect in treating corneal ulcer but human studies are mandatory. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
