Purpose:
Hard cataracts are very common in developing countries, especially in the Balkans. The invention of OZil probe was a revolutionary approach in hard cataract surgery. The aim of the paper is to point out the importance of OZil probe in hard cataract surgery.
Setting:
: Examination was conducted at the “Eye Vision Center Maja” - Niš
Methods:
We followed 500 operated eyes in 415 patients. All the patients were operated by an experienced surgeon and did not present any other ocular or systemic diseases. Cataracts were classified by using the Lens Opacities Classification System III and they were all of grade 4. Out of total number of eyes, 240 were operated using the Alcon Legacy apparatus (Group I), and 260 using the Alcon Infiniti apparatus with OZil probe (Group II). Intraoperative monitoring included: ultrasound time (UST), duration of the surgery and conversion rates. Postoperative best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and central corneal thickness (CCT) were determined after 1, 7 and 30 days.
Results:
The mean surgical duration in Group I was 15,3 +/-4.3 minutes, and in Group II 8,6 +/-2.5 minutes. UST in Group I was 0,8-5,4 min, with the mean value of 1,3 min, while UST in Group II was 0,4-1,0 min, with the mean value of 0,6 min. The conversion rate in Group I was 38, but in Group II the conversion was not required. BCVA and CCT showed statistical significance in favour of OZil probe for days 1 and 7, but after 30 days no statistical significance was registered.
Conclusions:
OZil probe is an efficient, fast and safe handpiece in management of hard cataracts. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
