Abstract Details

Purpose:

We sought to explore differences in the prevalence of systemic diseases between people with cataract and those without the cataract.

Setting:

: University Hospital Center „Sestre milosrdnice“,University Department of Ophthalmology , Zagreb, Croatia

Methods:

40 patients with cataract and 40 controls of matched age and gender were included in this study. A total of 52 females and 28 males aged over 60 years were randomly recruited during their visit in University Hospital Center „Sestre milosrdnice“,University Department of Ophthalmology , Zagreb for the ophthalmic examination. All included were interviewed using a questionnaire, covering the most common health problems such as hypertension, hyperlipidemia, diabetes mellitus, obesity, rheumatoid arthritis, thyroid disorders, atopic dermatitis, neurological disorders and various operative procedures. Analyses were conducted through multiple logistic regression.

Results:

According to analized data we found a higher prevalence of hypertension (72 %), hyperlipidemia (30%), diabetes mellitus (35 %) rheumatic disorders (15%), thyroid disorders (15%) and various operative procedures (57,5%) than in group of patients without cataract where we found the prevalence of hypertension (60 %), hyperlipidemia (20%), diabetes mellitus (20 %) rheumatic disorders (5%), thyroid disorders (6%) and various operative procedures (20%) . Some sistematic disorders like dermatological , neurological ,did not show any differences in the prevalence between cataract and non-cataract group.

Conclusions:

In general, we found that people with cataract have more sistemic diseases than people without cataract aged over 60 years. We discovered the higher prevalence of some self-reported sistemic disorders and eye disease in group with cataract which suggests important role of overall health status in cataractogenesis.
