Abstract Details

Purpose:

After cataract surgery it is important not only the improvement in visual acuity but also the effect of vision in patient’s life, called functional vision (FV). The purpose of the study was the evaluation of the visual function after cataract surgery with bilateral trifocal intraocular lens.

Setting:

: Hospital dos Lusiadas, Lisboa

Methods:

Prospective, nonrandomized study after implantation of 180 trifocal IOL (AT LISA tri 839MP®). Distance, intermediate and near vision were evaluated. Distance and near stereoacuity and contrast sensitivity were also performed. Patients´ satisfaction (spectacle independence, photic phenomena and visual satisfaction) was assessed by a self-report questionnaire. The authors do not have any financial interest in the subject matter of the presentation.

Results:

Study that included 180 trifocal IOL. 77,5% female, mean age 64,9 years (range 43-85) and mean IOL power +21,80 dioptres (range 12-29D). All patients achieved distance and intermediate vision of 20/30 or better; 97,1% achieved 20/30 of near vision. Patients reported spectacle independence in 85,2% of their daily activities Visual symptoms such as glare and light sensitivity were mild or inexistent in the majority of patients. Halos were reported as inexistent or mild 36,9% and 26,2% of patients, respectively. Overall satisfaction was high in .the majority of patients regarding global, distance, intermediate and near vision (95,4%, 90,9%, 91,1% and 92,6%, respectively).

Conclusions:

In conclusion, trifocal IOL enable excellent distance, intermediate and near visual acuity associated with high visual function and spectacle independence. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
