Abstract Details

Purpose:

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the aqueous humor and serum paraoxonase-1 (PON1) activity in patients with pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PES). We also investigated the PON-1 gene expression in epithelial cells of anterior lens capsules of patients with PES and compared those with age and sex matched healthy subjects.

Setting:

: Department of Ophthalmology, Abant Izzet Baysal University Medical School, Bolu, Turkey

Methods:

Twenty three cataract patients with PES (PES group) and 19 cataract patients without PES (control group) were enrolled in the study. Aqueous humor and blood samples were collected from patients who underwent routine cataract surgery. The anterior lens capsule tissue was also collected for genetic analysis. Aqueous humor and serum PON1 activity were measured by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay. The expression levels of PON1 gene in the epithelial cells of the anterior lens capsule was evaluated using the reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction.

Results:

The mean age of PES group (n=23, 11 female and 12 male) and control group (n=19, 9 female and 10 male) were 74.7±8.3 years and 75.2±6.8 years, respectively. There was no significant difference between the groups in terms of age and sex (p>0.05 for both). Mean aqueous humor PON1 activity in the PES group was 13.4±2.3 ng/ml and in the control group was 12.7±1.4 ng/ml. Mean serum PON1 activity in the PES group was 13.6±7.1 ng/ml and in the control group was 14±4.7 ng/ml. PON1 activity of aqueous humor and serum in the PES group was not significantly different than the control group (p>0.05 for both). There was no detectable PON1 gene expression in the epithelial cells of the anterior lens capsule in both groups.

Conclusions:

Aqueous humor and serum PON1 activities were not found significantly different between cataract patients with and without PES. PON1 was not expressed in the anterior lens epithelial cells regardless of the presence of PES. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
