Picturesque Slovenian capital will host 18th ESCRS winter meeting

A person beside me on the airport bus asked me where I was headed. "Ljubljana", I told him. "Never heard of it," he said. I predict he soon will. The prestigious travel guide, Lonely Planet, picked Slovenia as one of the “top destinations” of 2013, and it won't be long before its capital, Ljubljana, is recognised as the perfect city break.

LE PETIT CAFÉ
Just opposite the Križanke, this pleasant, boho place offers great coffee and a wide range of breakfast goodies, lunches and light meals, plus a good restaurant on the first floor.

CAFÉ ANTICO
With frescoed walls, painted ceiling and retro-style furniture, this pretty place is perfect for a quiet tête-à-tête over a cup of coffee or glass of wine. Also does small food items, like soups and stews.

ČAJNA HIŠA
The elegant and centrally located teahouse takes its teas very seriously. They also serve light meals and there's a tea shop next door.

ZVEDZDA
The 'Star' has all the usual varieties of coffee and tea but is celebrated for its shop-made cakes, especially skutina pečena (€3), an eggy cheesecake.

DVORNI BAR
This wine bar is an excellent place to taste Slovenian vintages; it stocks more than 100 varieties and has wine tastings every month (usually the 2nd Wednesday).

MAČEK
The place to be seen on a sunny summer afternoon, the 'Cat' is one of a number of spots on the right bank of the Ljubljanica to relax over a coffee or alcoholic beverage. Starts to really hop after sundown, when it morphs pretty seamlessly into a cocktail bar.

If you’re more interested in the grape than the grain, hop over to this excellent wine bar where, with due ceremony and ritual, you can taste your way through some award-winning Slovenian wines. It does retail as well.

This place may be located in the heart of Ljubljana, but don’t let that fool you: it’s epitome of funky – in a good way. This retro restaurant and cocktail bar on the 6th floor of the Nama department store with fabulous views becomes a popular dance venue nightly and attracts a very chi-chi crowd. Take the glass-bubble lift from along Slovenska cesta or the lift in the passageway linking Cankarjeva ulica and Tomšičeva ulica.
