Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate visual outcomes and patient satisfaction after bilateral femtosecond laser-assisted lens surgery with implantation of a trifocal intraocular lens (IOL).

Setting:

Goethe University, Department of Ophthalmology, Frankfurt, Germany

Methods:

Patients were included in this study after bilateral femtosecond laser-assisted cataract extraction or refractive lens exchange and implantation of a trifocal IOL (AT LISA tri839MP, Zeiss) in the bag. Mai inclusion criteria were regular corneal corneal astigmatism of less then 1.5 diopter (D). Exclusion criteria were any ocular pathologies. One and three month postoperative evaluation included spherical equivalent (SE), uncorrected and distance corrected visual acuity at 40cm, 80cm and 4m, defocus testing, and patient satisfaction.

Results:

Twenty-seven patients (53 eyes) were included in this study and 14 patients (27 eyes) completed the 3-month visit. SE changed from -1.42 ±4.78D preoperatively to 0.00 ±0.27D 3-month postoperatively. The mean monocular uncorrected visual acuity was 0.1 ±0.1logMAR at 40cm and 80cm and 0.0 ±0.1logMAR at 4m. The mean monocular distance corrected visual acuity was 0.06 ±0.15logMAR at 40cm, 0.00 ±0.1logMAR at 80cm and -0.1 ±0.1logMAR at 4m. The mean binocular uncorrected visual acuity was 0.00 ±0.1logMAR at 40cm 0.1 ±0.4logMAR in 80cm and 0.0 ±0.1logMAR at 4m. The mean binocular distance corrected visual acuity was 0.04 ±0.14logMAR in 40cm, 0.0 ±0.1logMAR in 80cm and -0.1 ±0.1logMAR in 4m. On a scale from 1 (very satisfied) to 6 (not satisfied at all) patients rated their quality of vision on average 2.0 for near and far distance. All patients would choose the same IOL again.

Conclusions:

Three month after implantation of the trifocal IOL patients had significantly reduced SE, good uncorrected visual acuity in near, intermediate and far distance.
