Abstract Details

Purpose:

To show the results of the pseudophakic toric implantation (AcrySof toric IOL – ALCON ®) in patients whit cataract associated whit a preoperative corneal astigmatism more than one diopter in our center.

Setting:

We present you a non-randomized, mono center transversal analytic study. A total of 70 toric implanted eyes of 55 patients from which 15 undergone bilateral toric implation were included in the study.

Methods:

Cataract surgery whit toric IOL implantation (AcrySof toric IOL – ALCON ®) performed by one experimented surgeon, to compensate the preoperative corneal astigmatism greater than 1 δ. The preoperative evaluation consisted in keratometric, visual acuity and biometric measurements. The postoperative evaluation consisted in slit lamp examination of the IOL, visual acuity measurements whit and without optical correction and a questioner regarding the patient’s satisfaction and theirs need for optical correction.

Results:

Before surgery the mean corneal astigmatism was – 1.85 δ in versus –0, 55 δ postoperatively (p<0.01). At six months after the surgery 75% of the patients had a non-corrected visual acuity ≥ 7/10 and 70% of the patients had a best corrected vision ≥ 10/10. The mean rotation angle of the IOL was lover than 4°. After the surgery 55% of the patients do not need far vision spectacles and 97% of them say that they are satisfied whit the surgery. There was no surgical complication revealed six months after the surgery.

Conclusions:

Cataract surgery whit toric IOL insertion is a very good indication in patients whit cataract associated whit a corneal astigmatism > 1 δ, due to the goods refractive results, the IOL rotation stability, the patients satisfaction and theirs independence regarding far vision spectacles.
