Abstract Details

Purpose:

To relate the well known gender differences in biometry prediction error (BPE) to the use of IOL calculation formula.

Setting:

About 65% of Swedish cataract surgery units participating in the outcome registration of the National Cataract Register (NCR).

Methods:

The refractive outcomes and keratometry of about 6000 yearly cataract procedures for the years 2004 to 2013 were analyzed. In addidtion, for 2013, the IOL calculation formula and the axial length were analyzed.

Results:

Females had a larger negative BPE, throughout the period of analysis, which decrased over time. For 2013, this difference remained in cases where the SRK-T formula was used for IOL calculation, but not where the Haigis formula was used.

Conclusions:

The historical gender differences in BPE have likely diminished because of an increased preference for the Haigis formula over the SRK-T formula. The gender differences likely owed to shorter axial lengths and steeper corneas in females, a theory which will require further analysis. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
