Purpose:
To assess the performance of the new TECNIS® 1-Piece Multifocal Toric intraocular lens (IOL) ZMT.
Setting:
Paracelsus Medical University Salzburg (Austria), Department of Ophthalmology
Methods:
In a prospective, multicenter study, the TECNIS® Multifocal Toric 1-Piece IOL ZMT (AMO) is implanted in cataract patients (n= 35). After having signed informed consent, subjects are bilaterally implanted with either two ZMT IOLs or with a ZMT IOL in the first eye and a TECNIS® Multifocal IOL ZMB00 in the second eye (if the second eye does not require cylinder correction). Follow-up visits take place 1 day and 1 week after surgery for each eye and 1 month and 3 months after surgery for both eyes. Key evaluation criteria are uncorrected and best-corrected visual acuity for near and distance, defocus curves, refractive outcome, ocular/visual symptoms, rotational stability, spectacle independence and subject satisfaction.
Results:
The final analysis will comprise 3 months follow-up data of 35 subjects. Up to now, all analyzed eyes achieved an absolute difference of 1D or less vs. targeted refractive cylinder outcome, and 70% achieved difference of 0.5D or less. More than 80% of the subjects analyzed achieved 20/25 uncorrected binocular distance visual acuity or better with an uncorrected binocular near visual acuity of 20/30 or better. Binocular depth-of-focus results for the ZMT lens series are similar to that achieved for the non-toric TECNIS® Multifocal ZM900 IOL. Postoperative medical and lens findings were typical for cataract surgery.
Conclusions:
The combination of a diffractive posterior surface with an established 1-piece toric design in the new TECNIS® Multifocal Toric IOL ZMT results in good predictability for good visual outcome in astigmatic patients. Depth-of-focus results are comparable to other TECNIS® Multifocal IOLs.
