Purpose:
To evaluate de effect of uneventful phacoemulsification on the morphology and thickness of the macula and the choroid.
Setting:
Ophthalmology department, Hospital São João, Porto, Portugal
Methods:
Retinal macular thickness, choroidal submacular thickness and choroidal peripapillary thickness were measured pre-operatively and at 1-week and 1-month after phacoemulsfication using enhanced depth imaging spectral domain optical coherence tomography. Changes in thickness of the different ocular tissues were evaluated. No patients had intra-operative complications. All patients were treated postoperatively with topica ofloxacin, flurbiprofen and dexamethasone.
Results:
There was a statistically significant increase in mean retinal macular thickness at one month. However, there were no significant changes in choroidal morphology in the submacular area or peripapillary area one month after surgery.
Conclusions:
Uncomplicated phacoemulsification induces non-pathologic increases in retinal macular thickness, however these changes are not accompanied by significant changes in choroidal thickness. The morphologic response to inflammatory insult of phacoemulsification is mainly observed at the retinal level. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
