Femtolaser correction of moderate myopia by SMILE

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To investigate the possibility and the effectiveness of the correction moderate myopia by SMILE method.

Setting:

Scientific research institute of eyes disease, Kazakhstan, Almaty

Methods:

62 patients (124 eyes) were operated by femtosecond laser with moderate myopia by using SMILE method. The average age was 34 years. Spherical equivalent refraction was average equal to (-) 5,5  0,09 D, not significant astigmatism accoding to acute vision was about (-) 1,05  0,07 D. UCVA in this group was average 0,1±0,08 and BCVA - 0,95±0.09. SMILE corection was carried out with VisuMax «Carl Zeiss Meditec» by treatment pack size S. Observation period was 12 months.

Results:

The UCVA after operation improved in all patients. After SMILE correction UCVA was 0,95±0,09. In the first two days, several patients noted blurred vision, which was explained by the presence of a slight intrastromal edema after the formation of an intrastromal lens. There were no complaints of a feeling of dryness in the eyes.During the entire period of observation, visual acuity remained stable. Patients were satisfied with the received refractive result.

Conclusions:

The received results showed the effectiveness of SMILE procedure in the correction of moderate myopia. According to its flapless technique and good postoperative results, abilities with the potential benefits of faster recovery of post-op dry eye, quicker reinnervation of corneal nerves, and biomechanical advantages in comparison with another methods SMILE method can be recommended for the correction of moderate myopia at the pations with absence of contraindications.
