Mixing and matching: which type of diffractive intraocular lens is the best fit?

Purpose:
To evaluate the best postoperative results with three types of diffractive intraocular lenses.
Setting:
Eye Clinic “Svjetlost” Banja Luka, RS, Bosnia-Herzegovina
Methods:
Postoperative results of two types of diffractive intraocular lenses and one extended depth of focus intraocular lens are to be presented. Patients were selected for the IOL implantation according to their preoperative evaluation and specific lifestyle needs. Near, intermediate and far visual acuities are measured, as well as the photic phenomena and secondary cataract presence were evaluated 3 months postoperatively.
Results:
Sixteen eyes received mix and match low add diffractive lenses, 18 eyes trifocal diffractive lenses and 22 eyes had extended depth of focus intraocular lenses. All patients had 1.0 (Snellen) for far, extended depth of focus lenses had the best intermediary vision, while low add diffractive lenses had the best near vision performance. The trifocal group had no photic phenomena, haloes were mostly present in the low add group, and negative disphotopsia in patients with an extended debt of focus lenses. PCO was present in the trifocal group (11.2%), and in the extended depth of the focus group (1.8%).
Conclusions:
All three types of lenses have the advantages and disadvantages. Individual approach to each patient is crucial for a good postoperative outcome.
