Abstract Details
Purpose:
In this study, we investigated the effect of ramadan fasting on anterior segment parameters, axial length and intraocular pressures of the eye.
Setting:
Ophthalmology Clinic, Haydarpasa Numune Education and Research Hospital, Istanbul, Turkey.
Methods:
A total of 42 healthy fasting volunteers with a mean age of 31.19 ± 6.86 years (range 20-45 years) were enrolled in the studyThe intraocular pressures and anterior segment parameters (axial length, central corneal thickness, anterior chamber depth, keratometry measurements) of 42 eyes of 42 fasting healthy volunteers were recorded at 16:00 p.m in last week of Ramadan 2015 and one month later.
Results:
According to the ramadan measurements, an average increase of 3.31 ± 1.87 mmHg in intraocular pressure 1 month thereafter was statistically significant (p = 0.001, p <0.01).Axial length, central corneal thickness, anterior chamber depth and keratometry measurements were not significantly different when measured during the fasting period in Ramadan and 1 month thereafter.
Conclusions:
Ramadan fasting is associated with significant intraocular pressure changes and this should be considered especially in glaucoma patients.Further studies are needed to better understand the effect of the ramadan fasting on the anterior segment parameters. Anterior chamber depth and axial measurements are important in intraocular lens power calculations and any change at these parameters can lead to refrective errors after cataract surgery
