Purpose:
The aim of this study was to evaluate the mean visual acuity (VA) of the female trainee school-teachers of Farhangian University (Resalat Campus) in Zahedan, Iran and its relationship with ethnicity, age, field of study, the average Grade Point Average and spectacle wear as well as relationship of dominance of hand and eye.
Setting:
This descriptive population based study was conducted to determine the average VA of the 580 trainee school-teachers of the Farhangian University (Resalat Campus) in Zahedan at 2015-2016 academic Year. We evaluated the relationship between VA and subject’s ethnicity, age, field of study, the average Grade Point Average, spectacle wear and the relationship of dominant hand and eye
Methods:
Sample size determined using stratified random sampling method. Visual acuity of all study subjects measured using Snellen acuity chart and converted to decimal notation. Subject’s demographic data were extracted from filled questionnaires. Findings were analyzed with descriptive statistics (prepared tables and charts, the number and frequency, etc.), and inferential statistics (correlation coefficient and T-Test, ANOVA, Chi squaer).
Results:
There was no statistically significant relationship between monocular and binocular VA with ethnicity, age, field of study, the average Grade Point Average and dominant hand. However, statistically significant relationship found between monocular and binocular VA with spectacle wear.
Conclusions:
Ocular examination after university entrance examination would be valuable measure for diagnosis and treatment of the any preexisting ocular abnormalities in trainee school-teachers.This strategy could lead to training of qualified school-teachers who are fundamental human resources in all societies.
