Herbal medications and dry eye: an overview based on Persian traditional medicine

Purpose:
Dry eye is one the most common ocular disorders which may lead to morbidity. Therapeutic measures for this common ocular disorder are mainly for symptomatic relief and seldom fundamental. The aim of this study was to introduce treatment approaches in Persian Traditional Medicine in management of this challenging ocular disorder.
Setting:
Collection of information has been made in the Tehran University library as well as search engines in Traditional Medicine.
Methods:
This systematic review was based on valid sources of traditional medicine in Iran in different periods such as Akbari's medicine, Nour Al-Ayoun and Jame al-Fonoun, Takkarat al-Khelin,Amrazol-Ain va Moalejat, Alagrazol Tebiyeh Val-mobahesatol Alaiyeh, Tebol Oyoun, Canon of Medicine, Eksir Azim. Pubmed and Google Scholar have been used as well.
Results:
The general principles of treatment in Persian Traditional Medicine include: discontinuance of offending factor, purification, temperament and cure. Treatment is divided into two categories of non-pharmacological and pharmacological treatments. Non-pharmacological treatments include essential measures to discontinue causes, attention to compliance and elimination of factors associated with the causes. Among the most important measures, food measures that include spinach salad, fatty meats and subtle meat such as plain soup, a starch made with young goat milk, sheep goats, chicken poultry, and avoid spicy foods. Other measures include consumption of garlic, onions and salt intake. Also, avoiding everything that causes dryness, including continuous sexual activity, look to bright objects, reading fine lines, high precision work, prolonged awakening, exposure to smoke, mist and uncontrolled air. Moreover, considering that one of the causes of the disease is the use of medications, it can be concluded that attention to the time when the symptoms of dry eye or its intensification and its relationship with the use of other drugs and the proper management of the prohibition of medication.
Conclusions:
As per the discoveries of researchers of conventional medicine in dry eye and its different treatment modalities we would like to suggest the historical modalities in treatment of dry eye provided that well control trials made.
