Central corneal thickness measurement in patients with corneal dystrophy

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare central corneal thickness (CCT) measurement in patients with corneal dystrophy.

Setting:

Farabi Eye Hospital, Tehran University of Medical Sciences

Methods:

This cross sectional case series study included 16 consecutive patients with corneal dystrophy. After confirming diagnosis by two cornea specialist, central corneal thickness measurement was done using Pentacam, optical coherence tomography and ultrasound pachymetry.

Results:

16 patients (31 eyes) with corneal dystrophy with mean age of 34.4±13.6 of whom 6 patients (37.5%) were female and 10 patients ( 62.5%) were male. 15 eyes (48.4%) were diagnosed with Macular dystrophy, 10 eyes (32.3%) with Granular dystrophy, 4 eye (12.9%) with Lattice dystrophy and 2 eyes (6.5%) with Fleck dystrophy. Mean CCT measured with ultrasound pachymetry, Pentacam and OCT was 502.00±42.09 m, 566.74±185.09 m, 497.96±35.29 m, respectively. The thinnest point of the cornea was measured 470.96±106.82 m. There was a significant correlation between CCT measured with ultrasound pachymetry and OCT (Spearman's correlation, R=0.75, p<0.0001). The correlation between CCT measured by Pentacam and ultrasound pachymetry was significant nor in pupil area neither in thinnest point (R=0.38, P=0.04 and R=0.36 and P=0.07 respectively)

Conclusions:

OCT is a safe, reliable and accurate substitute for ultrasound pachymetry for assessing central corneal thickness in patients with corneal dystrophy. Pentacam can not be used instead of ultrasound pachymetry for CCT measurement.
