Methods:

Twenty three patients with Dry Eye Syndrome, who have never been treated before were included in this study. There were 20 women and 3 men treated with eye drops containing semifluorinated alkanes (EvoTears, Ursapharm, Germany). Treatment duration of 14-21 days. At each visit, the physician examine patient in slit lamp, make tear break up time, Schirmer test without local anesthesia, clearance of fluorescein with Corneal Fluorescein Staining(CFS) and checked for adverse events. To investigate effects on quality of life patients were asked to fill out the version of McMonnies questionnaire and Ocular Surface Disease Index questionnaire.

Results:

Strong reduction of symptom severity was shown for the parameters OSDI (23 % reduction), McMonnies questionnaire (19% reduction) and degree of Lid-Parallel Conjunctival Fold (1 point degree). Significant improvement after treatment in comparison to before it for itching, lacrimation and redness (2.5 before to 1.0 after; 2.5 to 2.0; 2.0 to 1.0 respectively). Good tolerability results, a very low number of adverse events supported this observation. The treatment resulted in a clear improvement in the quality of life as assessed by a questionnaire answered at the beginning and at the end of the trial.

Conclusions:

The eye drops containing semifluorinated alkanes (EvoTears) are effective in the treatment of Dry Eye Syndrome symptoms. This therapy improved the patients quality of life.
