Central corneal thickness in east of Iran: a retrospective study in Zahedan

Abstract Details

Purpose:

Central corneal thickness (CCT) has an important role in assessment of ocular hypertension and glaucoma as well as refractive surgery. A number of studies found a relationship between ethnicity and CCT therefore we conducted this study to find clinical reference values in our ethnicity.

Setting:

Zahedan University of Medical Sciences, Alzahra Eye hospital in 2016

Methods:

In this cross sectional study, non-inferential sampling method used and conducted as an observational-descriptive survey. Cases with corneal disease, clinical evidence of glaucoma, cataract, eyelid abnormalities, elevated IOP (>21 mmHg), a spherical equivalent more severe than ±1.00 D, or a history of intraocular surgery were excluded from participation. We included 252 healthy referral subjects, aged between 20-50 years old, who had no ocular pathology, diabetes and history of contact lens wearing. Subsequently, CCT measured by pentacon (Oculus version 1.3). Data recorded and normalized by Kolmogorov-Smirnov test for normalization. We divided subjects into three age groups. Subsequently, using independent T test and ANOVA, the mean CCT was compared in different age groups.

Results:

In this study, 144 males and 108 females were included. They were divided into two ethnic groups (126 subjects in each). The average CCT in the south-east of Iran measured 536.3 μm with a standard deviation of 32,65 μm which significantly lower than other ethnic groups (P <0.0002).

Conclusions:

Our findings revealed that the normal range for mean CCT was 539.7-528.08 μm whereas, the normal worldwide reported range was 554-537 μm which is significantly comparable. This variation could be dependent to life style, nutrition and genetic factors which should be confirmed to justify with further studies.
