Outcomes of phaco surgery in posterior polar cataract

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate intraoperative complications and postoperative outcome of phacoemulsification in posterior polar cataract. 

Setting:

University Hospital of Patras, Rio, Greece. 

Methods:

Medical records of 18 eyes of 11 patients that presented with posterior polar cataract and underwent cataract surgery between January 2015 and April 2017 were reviewed. Mean age of the study group was 65 ±8 years. Exclusion criteria were defined as fibrosed, traumatic or subluxated lenses. All eyes underwent an uncomplicated standard phacoemulsification using direct chopping technique and an acrylic foldable 3-piece intraocular lens was implanted. 

Results:

Mean visual acuity (0.16±0.07 logMAR) was significantly higher after cataract surgery (p<0.001). Posterior capsule rupture occurred in 2 out of the 22 eyes (9.1%). Intra-operatively no extension of capsulorhexis or nucleus drop occurred. No inflammation or elevation of intraocular pressure were recorded post-surgically.

Conclusions:

Phacomulsification in posterior polar cataract is safe with low incidence of complications during intraoperative and postoperative course. Visual acuity recovers significantly after surgery in most cases.
