Visual function after implantation of 2 different IOL: TNFT00 (trifocal) and ZXR00 (extended depth of focus)

Purpose:

Based on current evidence, the solution for presbyopic pseudophakia is multifocal IOLs. Patient-centered and visual quality outocomes allow for a more detailed evaluation of the performance of newer IOLs. The purpose of the study was the evaluation of the visual function after cataract surgery with bilateral nonapodized diffractive trifocal (NDT) and extended depth of focus IOLs (EDOF).

Setting:

Hospital dos Lusíadas, Lisboa, Portugal

Methods:

Prospective, nonrandomized study that included 112 eyes from 56 patients with cataract seeking for spectacle independence. Phacoemulsification with bilateral implantation of one of the following IOLs was performed: TNFT00 AcrySof® IQ PanOptix from Alcon (44 eyes, group 1) or ZXR00 TECNIS Symfony from Abbott (68 eyes, group 2). Distance, intermediate and near VA were evaluated. Distance and near stereoacuity, contrast sensitivity and chromatic vision evaluation were also performed. Patients’ satisfaction was assessed by a self-report questionnaire.

Results:

Study that included 112 IOL, majority were female (77,3% group 1 and 77,9% group 2), mean age was 64,6 years (group 1) and 65,4 (group 2); mean IOL power was +22,5D (group 1) and +22,8 (group 2). Mean follow-up was 13,2 months for group 1 and 32,2 months for group 2. Percentage of patients with distance VA ≥ 1,0 was 94,1% (group1) and 100% (group 2); intermediate VA ≥1,0 was 94,1% (group 1) and 95,2% (group 2), near VA ≥ J1 was 94,1% (group 1) and 52,6% (group 2). The presence of halos was superior in group 1 (46,15% vs 22,9%). On the other hand, the incidence of glare was inferior in this group (15,4% vs 34,3%); Near visual satisfaction was superior in group 1 (100% vs 71,4%), distance, intermediate and global visual satisfaction was similar (100% vs 94,8%; 99,9% vs 92,3% and 100% vs 95,4%, respectively); Spectacle independence was higher in group 1 (92.6% vs 75.9%). Zero post-operative complications were recorded.

Conclusions:

In conclusion, better near VA is obtained with the NDT IOL. Patients have good visual function with both IOLs although there are some differences regarding visual symptoms and visual satisfaction.
