Purpose:
To evaluate visual outcome and subjective experience after bilateral implantation of trifocal intraocular lens (IOL).

Methods:
Consecutive patients with bilateral implantation of Acrysof Panoptix (24 eyes) trifocal IOLs were followed for 3-months. Distance (UDVA), intermediate (UIVA), and near (UNVA) visual acuities and quality-of-vision (QOV) questionnaire scores were evaluated preoperatively and at 3-months postoperatively, including presence of halos or dysphotopsia.
Results:
Mean binocular UDVA (logMAR) was 0.06 ± 0.07 at 6 m; UIVA was 0.07 ± 0.15 at 60 cm; and UNVA 0.15 ± 0.25 at 40 cm. Photopic contrast sensitivity for distance was similar to asymmetric multifocal IOL contrast sensitivity function. Mean patient quality of vision questionnaire score was 8.05 ± 1.30 (scale 0 to 10); 82.5% of patients were completely independent of spectacles. Mild to moderate halos, glare, and starburst problems were reported by 4.3%, 7.9%, and 4.7% of patients, respectively.
Conclusions:
The new-generation trifocal IOL provided adequate distance, intermediate, and near vision with high rates of spectacle independence. Photic phenomena, especially with artificial lighting, happens in a small percentage of patients.
