Abstract Details
Purpose:
To assess the results of the phacoemulsification of hard cataracts on post vitrectomised eyes
Setting:
S. Fyodorov Eye Microsurgery Federal State Institution. Saint-Petersburg.
Methods:
This study included 20 patients with nuclear cataracts with NC 5+ density according LOCS III classification system. All patients underwent posterior vitrectomy more then 3 years ago (4.5 +/- 3.1). In seven cases phacodonesis of varying degrees were diagnosed prior to the surgery. All patients were scheduled microcoaxial phacoemulsification.
Results:
In 19 cases (95%) sutureless phacoemulsification were performed successfully. In 7 cases (35%) with phacodonesis, capsular support hooks were used in order to stabilize capsular bag. 4 hooks were placed in 3 cases (15%) and in one of them (5%) due to a high risk of nucleus dislocation into vitreus cavity the surgery were converted into large incision surgery. The surgery were finished sutureless in all cases when 6 hooks were placed (n=4, 20%).
Conclusions:
System of capsule support hooks significantly increases the chances of successful sutureless phacoemulsification of hard cataracts without vitreous support.
