Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate patient satisfaction and reading performance 5 years after KAMRA inlay implantation for surgical treatment for presbyopia.

Setting:

Levant HOSPITAL, Beirut, Lebanon

Methods:

An intracorneal inlay was implanted in the non dominant eye of 64 emmetropic presbyopic patients aged between 45 and 60 years’ old with an uncorrected near visual acuity less than 20/40 correctable to at least 20/25, and without additional ocular pathology. Uncorrected near visual acuity (UNVA), uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA), reading distance and satisfaction questionnaires were evaluated at 5 years.

Results:

Sixty-four patients were enrolled, from November 2011 to June 2012. The mean reading distance decreased from 46.8 cm ± 2.07 (SD) TO 39.0 cm ± 2.6 (SD), the mean reading acuity at best distance UNVA was significantly improved 2.5 lines from 0.467 logMAR ± 0.027 to 0.213 logMAR ± 0.069 and the mean visual acuity UDVA also improved 2.7 lines from 0.325 logMAR ± 0.055 to 0.072 logMAR ± 0.053 after 5 years. 93.75% (60 patients) were very satisfied of the results after 60 months postop. 15.63% (10 patients) underwent cataract surgery during the follow up period and the visual outcome was not affected.

Conclusions:

Patients maintain excellent near and far visual acuity and are satisfied with their result with the KAMRA inlay after 5 years.
