Abstract Details
Purpose:
Is to compare corneal sensation change between Femto-LASIK and Femto-SMILE using a Cochet-Bonnet corneal esthesiometer.
Setting:
Roayah vision correction center
Methods:
A prospective, non-randomized interventional comparative clinical study included 100 eyes of patients divided into 2 groups 50 eyes were treated using Femto-LASIK and 50 eyes were treated using SMILE surgery for myopia and myopic astigmatism to evaluate the corneal sensation before and after surgery up to 6 months. Femto-SMILE procedure and the fashioning of Flaps were done by the VisuMax® femtosecond laser platform with 500 kHz repetition rate, followed by Excimer laser Photoablation by the MEL 80™ in case of the Femto-LASIK.Corneal sensitivity was measured centrally using a Cochet-Bonnet corneal esthesiometer, preoperatively and 1 week, 1 month, 3 month, and 6 months postoperatively.
Results:
After SMILE the preoperative mean central corneal sensitivity dropped from 58.3 mm preoperatively to 29.7 mm 1 week postoperatively, rising to 31.9 mm, 38.3 mm, and 48.1 mm over 6 months. For Femto-LASIK, the mean central corneal sensitivity dropped from 57.56 mm preoperatively to 21.48 mm at 1 week, rising to 23.44 mm, 28.8 mm, 45.3 mm, over 6 months., On comparing there was a statistically significant difference between the two groups at 1 week, 1 months, 3 months postoperatively where SMILE was higher in corneal sensation p =<0.001*.There was no statistically significant difference between the two groups at six months p =0.09.
Conclusions:
Corneal sensation was significantly decreased after both SMILE and Femto-LASIK at postoperative 1 week, 1 month, 3 month, and 6 months. The Decrease in corneal sensation was more pronounced after Femto-LASIK.At 6 months we found No significance difference between both groups.
