Purpose:
To evaluate the posterior capsule opacification (PCO) rate of a four-haptic design intraocular lens (IOL) (Akreos®, Baush & Lomb, Roshester, NY, USA) after clear corneal phacoemulsification.

Methods:
In this prospective study, one eye of each patient received a four-haptic hydrophobic acrylic IOL implantation after uneventful small incision cataract surgery using phacoemulsification through 2.2 to 2.8 mm incision. Follow-up examinations were performed 1 week, 1 month, 3 month and 6 months postoperatively. Anterior segment photographs under retroillumination were obtained between 6 to 12 months postoperatively and PCO rate was analyzed semiquantitatively using an image analyze system. Furthermore, anterior capsule contraction and capsular phimosis were also assessed.
Results:
A total of 24 eyes (11 right and 13 left eyes) of 24 patients (13 male, 11 female) were included in the study. Mean age of the patients was 72.4±8.6 (66-84) years. One eye developed capsular phymosis. A significant PCO was observed in only one eye which was treated with Neodymium:YAG laser capsulotomy. A mean PCO score was found as 0.2±0.4. The mean fibrotic PCO score was 0.7±0.7 and anterior capsule opacification score was 1.1±0.50. Capsular phimosis was not detected. Decentration and tilt was not observed in none of the eyes in the follow-up period.
Conclusions:
The investigated hydrophobic acrylic four-haptic design posterior chamber IOL showed favorable PCO rate compared to two-haptic IOLs of the same material used in clear corneal phacoemulsification cataract surgery. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
